NEW signing Charlie Austin has been backed to get among the goals once he gets used to the Championship.

Burnley boss Eddie Howe has started the former Swindon Town striker in both games since making him a £1.2million capture in the January transfer window.

An impressive tally of 17 goals in 27 appearances for Swindon this season, and an overall total of 37 goals in 65 games, made Austin a target for a number of Championship clubs, including Ipswich Town, who he turned down in favour of a move to Turf Moor.

And Howe insists Clarets fans will see more from the 21-year-old as soon as he has adapted to a higher level.

“I think there’s a big difference between League One and the Championship and I think it will take him time to adjust to the pace of the game and how quick it is,” said the 33-year-old, who took Austin on trial at Bournemouth two summers ago but couldn’t sign him because of a transfer embargo at Dean Court.

“Once he does he’ll be fine and the two games that he’s had have been really important to him.

“We’re going to look to work with him and improve him.

“But we know that once he gets chances he will score goals.”
