BLACKBURN Rovers winger Morten Gamst Pedersen reignited Norway’s World Cup qualifying hopes with a two-goal salvo against Scotland in Oslo yesterday – but it proved a miserable outing for Burnley's Graham Alexander, Steven Caldwell and his brother Gary.

Caldwell was rewarded for his superb last season at Turf Moor with his 10th international cap at the Ullevaal Stadium and his first cap since facing Switzerland in a friendly in March 2006.

But the Caldwell brothers endured a rough night in Scandinavia, with Gary sent off in the first-half for two yellow cards, and Steven substituted early in the second period after also collecting a caution, as the hosts racked up the goals.

Clarets veteran Graham Alexander played a full 90 minutes for the Scots.

The Caldwell brothers had started together for Scotland once before, in a World Cup qualifier in Moldova almost five years ago, in a match which saw Gary play right-back. The result saw Scotland slip to third in World Cup qualifying Group Nine, severely hitting their hopes of reaching next summer's finals in South Africa.

Pedersen was afforded too much time before slotting home with aplomb just before half-time and wrapped up three points for Norway with a late free-kick.

Burnley striker Steven Fletcher was an unused substitute in the match, while Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Paul Robinson watched England's 2-2 draw with Netherlands from the subs' bench.

Meamwhile, Blackburn Rovers defender Johnny Flynn was sent off in Northern Ireland under 21s’ defeat in Portugal and keeper Frank Fielding was a half-time sub for England under 21s.
