Horton a ton star in Lancashire's win over Derbyshire

Paul Horton’s second successive Friends Provident Trophy century maintained Lancashire’s unbeaten record in the competition.

The 26-year-old opener, who hit 100 against Northants last Sunday, guided the Lightning to an eight-wicket Group D success over Derbyshire Phantoms at Old Trafford. They top the group with three wins from three matches.

In reply to Derbyshire’s 240 for six from their 50 overs Mark Chilton also hit his fifth one-day career century, his first since August, 2004.

Horton, who became the fourth Lancashire player to record successive one-day hundreds, finished unbeaten on 111 and Chilton 101 not out.

After being invited to field Derbyshire were indebted to former West Indies batsman Wavell Hinds’ highest score for the county, a 96-ball 95.

Hinds came in at the fall of the second wicket when former Lancashire captain Stuart Law was run out by Chilton for 18.

Law took a couple of steps down the wicket at the non-striker’s end before being sent back by Steve Stubbings (50) only to see his stumps disturbed by his fellow ex-Red Rose captain from short cover.

Dan Redfern had been the first Phantom out when he was caught behind by Luke Sutton off the bowling of Glen Chapple for 11 in the eighth over. Skipper Chapple was the pick of Lancashire’s bowling with one for 32 from 10 overs.

Stubbings and Hinds shared a cautious third-wicket stand of 104 in 25 overs taking the visitors from 41 for two to 145 for two at the start of the third batting powerplay in the 39th over.

Sandwiched in between helping to take 10 runs off successive Gary Keedy overs Hinds reached his fifty off 65 balls with five fours.

Having reached his half-century off 107 balls Stubbings was the third man to depart, with the score on 145, off the very first ball of the batting powerplay in the 39th over. Francois du Plessis executed a smart catch at point off the bowling of Mahmood.

In the end the departure of Stubbings probably helped Derbyshire gain some much needed impetus because Jamie Pipe hit 21 off 18 balls, Greg Smith 17 off 15 and Graham Wagg 15 off just seven.

Hinds was dropped on 67 by Chilton at square-leg off the bowling of Chapple but was finally dismissed in the 49th over thanks to a superb diving left-handed catch by Sutton to give Mahmood his second wicket (two for 47 from ten overs).

Tom Smith and Ashwell Prince both fell early in Lancashire chase to Garry Park and Greg Smith to leave the score 39 for two in the 12th over.

Horton and Chilton then shared an unbroken third-wicket partnership of 202 to confirm victory with 21 balls to spare. Horton brought up his ton off 133 balls and Chilton his off 97.

Chilton reached three figures with a six over mid-wicket off the bowling of Wagg.
