Mac happy to stay a Shrimp

NEW Morecambe hero Henry McStay has been rewarded for his starring Shrimp displays with a new two-year contract - and he couldn't be happier.

Right-back turned centre-half McStay has impressed since his arrival on a short-term contract from Royal Antwerp in Feb-ruary.

And his big displays during his run in the team have led to the new deal, which he put pen to paper on to complete on Monday evening.

"I am really happy. I have been trying to sort out the contract for a few weeks and it means a lot to have the stability," he tells the Citizen.

"I can start looking for a house now, which is good because I have had a few trials at a few clubs and it is good for me to settle down."

McStay (pictured right) is impressed with life at Morecambe - even though he admits he wasn't expecting to be at the heart of the defence.

"I signed as a right back but now I seem to be having a run in the middle and I am enjoying it," he says.

"This is a good club. The lads are great and obviously the manager is good to play under and it has been a wonderful season.

"To say we have just come up we have done really well with two good cup runs and a place settled in mid-table. We were within a shout of the play-offs and that is a fabulous first season in the Football League.

"It will be hard next season but I am sure the manager knows what needs to be done and we are looking forward to it already."

The Armagh-born 23-year-old former Leeds United and Halifax Town star has played 10 times for the Shrimps since quitting Belgium because of home sickness.

He played international football for Northern Ireland's Under 17s before opting for the Republic of Ireland.

McStay, who has played for the Republic's Under 19s and Under 21s, also featured for Ireland when they won the Youth Olympic tournament in 2001.

He is also rated as an expert penalty taker.
