BURNLEY dominated possession and chances but couldn't mark Owen Coyle's first game in charge with a win.

The Clarets, sporting pale blue and white striped shirts in this game to mark their 125th anniversary, had a host of chances in both halves but lacked the killer instinct to finish off a poor Stoke City side.

Alan Mahon was unlucky to be denied an 18-yard volley by a brilliant fingertip save from Steve Simonsen.

It was the pick of first-half chances that had fallen to Andy Gray, Kyle Lafferty, Chris McCann, David Unsworth and Wade Elliott.

Gabor Kiraly, meanwhile, was only called into action just before the break, when he palmed away Rory Delap's effort from outside the box.

Burnley began the second half in similar attacking fashion, with Blake and McCann both testing Simonsen early.

Stoke substitute Jon Parkin threatened, but he was denied by Unsworth's well-timed challenge in the box.

The Clarets were revitalised by the introduction of Ade Akinbiyi, Joey Gudjonsson and Steve Jones in the last 15 minutes, and Gudjonsson was unlucky not to clinch a late win with two venomous strikes that bounced off Simonsen's hands.
