CHRIS McCann believes he was right to walk out of the Republic of Ireland U21 squad - although he realises it may have jeopardised his international prospects.

The 20-year-old Clarets midfielder was blasted by Ireland U21 boss Don Givens after refusing to take his place on the bench for Tuesday's European Championship qualifier against Bulgaria in Athlone.

McCann was an unused substitute against Montenegro last Friday and was incensed when he was again omitted from Ireland's starting line-up.

After voicing his discontent, McCann was ordered by Givens to pack his things' and the manager hinted that the former Home Farm player may not be picked again while he remained in charge.

Despite stinging media criticism, McCann stands by his decision to leave the squad, although he admits he would show up if he was selected in the Irish squad again.

"I've read the papers and I know what has been said about me, but I can't go back on what happened," he said.

"I won't be ringing Don but if he called me up again then I would report for duty. I know that is unlikely to happen.

"Of course, I do want to play for Ireland but I was away with the squad for two games and if I'm not being given a chance then what was the point in me being there?"

The midfielder's actions could have serious consequences on the international scene, but McCann added: "People might see me in a bad light but I can't go back on it now.

"I know I'm good enough to have been in the team. What happened has happened and I just want to leave it at that."

In the aftermath of Ireland's 1-0 qualifying win over Bulgaria, Givens said: "I regret now that he hadn't told me earlier because I'd have got somebody else on the bench.

"I could have got somebody in because half this town would give their right arm to play for their country. Here's a kid who doesn't want to be there."
