THE final event of the 2007 Sporting Courses (SPOCO) Series will be held at Longridge on Sunday, just further down the Ribble Valley than this year's first event, which was promoted by the Rossendale Road Club at Bolton-by-Bowland in February.

The organiser of this last counter is Martin Wallis of Wallis Cycles at Higher Walton, who is also overall promoter of the popular series, which has included 20 events across the north west and has 225 riders presently scoring points.

The final race will start at 10am and take in one 19-mile lap of a circuit around Longridge Fell, which includes the stiff climb of Chaigley, from Higher Hodder Bridge. 52 riders are entered and much can depend on this event to settle the final outcome.

In fact, on Saturday, the penultimate event will be held in Cumbria, making this weekend crucial to the final placings.

From the 20 counting events, riders are required to complete a minimum of eight in order to qualify, and there is still the possibility of some major changes at this late stage.

One of the very few certainties going into the final weekend is that Burnley's Peter Greenwood, riding for the Clayton Velo, is unbeatable in the Veteran 50+ category.

The final presentation of the SPOCO trophies will be made in Longridge Sports Centre on Preston Road at around 12 noon on Sunday after that deciding event.

In the Rossendale Road Club mid-week 10-mile time trial at Hapton, Roy Flanagan was fastest in 25 min 32 seconds beating two North Lancs Road Club riders Mark Bateman (26-36) and Joe Curran (27-34), with Rossendale's Adrian Watts fourth in 28-04.

Flanagan set a new personal best 100-mile on Saturday, near Derby, with a time of 4 hours 08 minutes 55 seconds.

The North Lancashire Road Club 10-mile, at Clitheroe, was won by Duncan Park in 23 min 48 seconds, beating Rob Dickinson (24-19), Fraser Snape (24-23) and Adrian Watts (26-26).

The Pendle Forest mid-week event was a 10-mile two-up team time trial, with the pairing of Peter Heywood and James Cruikshank, of Nelson Wheelers, winning in 25m 01 second, and Steve Singleton, of Pendle Forest, and Kevin Hickie second in 26-16.
