ACCRINGTON Stanley's move for a mystery Scottish defender has stalled until he can prove his fitness.

The unnamed SPL player, who had a hip operation in the close season, was due to travel to East Lancashire today to finalise details of a move to the League Two side, but Reds chairman Eric Whalley has revealed the deal will not be done until the middle of next month at least.

He said: "It's been delayed until he's fit enough to start training. He hasn't trained since he had his operation so we've put it on hold.

"The physio at the club he's with said he should be alright, but we've already had our fingers burnt before, so we want to make sure he's fit to play."

Meanwhile, manager John Coleman is set to open negotiations with Liverpool later this week about a possible return to the Fraser Eagle Stadium for young defender Godwin Antwi.

Whalley added: "He'll be talking to Liverpool about taking Godwin on for a full season-long deal."
