THE goalkeeper position has been a bit of a problem area for us over the last two seasons.

It's been absolutely frightening.

If you go back to Rob Elliot, we thought he was one of the best keepers we had seen at this level for a long time.

But he went away and had an absolutely abysmal pre-season by his own standards.

He came back a stone-and-a-half overweight and he never really recovered from that.

We thought we had the best keeper in League Two, but that just shows that you have to look after yourself and you have to be mentally strong.

If I could label something at Rob at all, it would be that I don't think he was mentally strong.

The situation we have now is that we've got to get a Premiership youngster because it's very difficult to get one from the Championship or League One.

There are a lot of teams who are just carrying two keepers and if their first choice gets injured, then they immediately look to the Premiership clubs for one of their youngsters to sit on the bench.

Experienced keepers are very hard to find and, at the moment, we don't even have a number one keeper.

David Martin came to us with great credentials and we had him watched a few times.

I think it was after a minute against Lincoln that the physio turned round and said the keeper was struggling. I don't think he'd even touched the ball.

I turned round and I saw him hobbling and I couldn't believe it and the next thing he was on the ground and having to come off.

Przemyslaw Kazimierczak isn't a bad keeper. I had a chat with him and I told him that we thought Martin would improve our side.

It wasn't a slight on Kazimierczak at all, just we felt the other lad was better in terms of his age and his experience.

And we're still looking for another keeper. It's a situation John and myself are aware of and it's something we're trying to address.
