CRAIG Aikman has had a taste of international rugby now he is hungry for more!

The 28-year-old from Burnley played a cameo roll in England Counties 20-17 defeat against their Irish counterparts in Dublin on Friday night.

Scrum half Aikman, who sat the first part of his law exam on the morning of the match, came on as a late replacement with just five minutes remaining.

While he was disappointed with his bit part' it has made him all the more determined to feature in England's next match against France Counties on March 10.

"Naturally, I was disappointed not to have started the match and then not to have come on earlier than I did," said Aikman who plays for Halifax RUFC. "But I have won my England cap and it has made me all the more determined to play against France.

"I thought the lads played really well in Ireland but we just didn't make the most of the opportunities we created."

Despite his late appearance, Aikman played his part in a late rally that saw England fall just short of victory.

"It was a bit frustrating coming on so late but I was happy with the part I played in the closing stages.

"But just being involved in the whole England set-up was a great experience."

Aikman, who will continue to sit his law exams this week, won't have the worries of juggling his studies and training when England Counties are next in action at Blackheath RUFC next month.

"I'm sure my studies had some significance as to why I was on the bench in Ireland but I won't have to worry about that against France.

"It was quite difficult because when the lads were going to the cinema or bowling after training, I had to go back to my room to study. The lads were great about it but I missed out on the team bonding that goes on."

Aikman will have three days of training with the England squad ahead of the France game - a chance to convince coaches he is worthy of a place in the starting line-up.

He added: "I'm really looking forward to linking up with the squad again. We have already been told it will be the same group of players involved so it is up to me to impress the coaches and try and get a place in the team."

The former Park Hill Primary School pupil is also hoping to earn a call-up to the Lancashire squad.

"I've been asked about my availability and as long as it doesn't clash with my exams then I would be delighted to play for my county."
