AN URGENT call for help went in to police.

Serious concerns were reported over the welfare of a woman.

She was feared to be suicidal and needed help.

Unfortunately, Police Constable Michael Fletcher was sent to her home.

Instead of assistance, he saw an opportunity.

In the words of the police watchdog, he ‘used the situation for his own sexual gratification’.

Fletcher had sex with her while on duty, and returned after his shift later that evening for more.

Yesterday he paid the price.

Fletcher had already lost his job. Yesterday he was sent to prison for two years and eight months.

Given that serious assaults, sex attacks and burglars result in suspended sentences these days, that could be seen as a harsh punishment.

But it is vital that a strong message is sent out about misconduct in the police.

As well as the affect on his victim, Fletcher caused a great deal of damage to the police’s reputation.

His own Chief Constable said his conduct was ‘disgraceful’.

He is right – and that is why Fletcher deserves every single day of his sentence.
