SO THE battle has been lost and post offices are to close in around a month... it is a disgraceful decision taken by bean counters who do not populate the real world.
Okay, many people do not use a post office in this cashless society and many will send e-mails or text messages rather than write letters. But there are still countless thousands who use their post office regularly - some on a daily basis.
Obviously, we will never know the truth about the closures. We will never find out if the so-called consultation period was just a joke... but we are not stupid and can put two and two together to come up with an answer.
All the hyperbole and assorted non-sense about meeting criteria' is bewildering and baffling when Post Office Ltd spends a fortune on TV adverts starring the likes of Wendy Richard and some fat fella who used to be in Cops and Born and Bred.
TV advertising costs a fortune - and I can't see why it would attract anyone who doesn't use the service into a post office. It might just be me - but that is like offering sugar-laden sweets to a diabetic...
The local post office is an essential service used by many people. It is not always convenient to use the main post office. Lancaster's main post office, for instance, is not a pleasant experience. The queues can be horrific and some of the staff think smiling is only for aliens.
It is too late to save the doomed branches - but at least the shareholders will be happy...
I know it is not really possible, but wouldn't it be nice if everyone could boycott the remaining post offices. And then the fat cats and other assorted nobodies really might feel the pinch... because this decision is nothing short of a disgrace.
