AS A pedestrian who uses the local multi-user paths, not cycle paths, daily, I welcome the use of grit to slow cyclists down and give some awareness to pedestrians of their approach.
Most cyclists I have come across do not use or have bells fitted and the first warning you have of their approach is when they shoot past you, often at high speed.
This can be frightening and intimidating, more so at night when they come out of the darkness with no lights of course!
The signs on the multi-user paths request cyclists not to speed and point out that they are intended for enjoyment and appreciation of the countryside. They are not a section of the Tour de France!
All users of these paths have equal rights to enjoy and be safe on them. Or are some more equal than others?' Pam Duff, Lancaster.
