IN REPLY to James Ryder (Letters last week)) I am in favour of cycle paths but I think cyclists who use them should have a bell on their bike and use it when approaching walkers form behind.
When I was walking along the cycle/footpath from the millennium bridge to Carlisle bridge with my four-year-old grand daughter she suddenly turned to look at something on the river. I just managed to stop her running to look when a cyclist came from behind going hell for leather.
If he had hit my grand daughter she would have been badly hurt. Therefore I think bells should be compulsory and then there would be no need for gravel on the path surface.
