BLOOMING HECK Heysham has done it again.

The picturesque village has topped the poll to scoop gold in the small village' category at the annual RHS Britain in Bloom awards for the second time.

Heysham won the top prize in 2005 and, under the rules of the competition, was not allowed to enter for last year's floral gong.

But a delegation from the village travelled to Coventry last night (Wednesday) for the 2007 awards - and returned home triumphant in the early hours today.

Spokesman Angela Sykes (pictured) says: "It's unbelievable. We were so shocked to win that it hasn't really sunk in yet.

"Everyone in the village worked really hard and it's fantastic that we have come up trumps again."

advertisementRHS Britain in Bloom Judge Martyn Hird says of Heysham: "Flowers abound in window boxes and baskets along the narrow streets and there is also an increasing and welcome emphasis on sustainable and permanent planting on street corners and in community gardens.

"We were very impressed with the floral impact of the village including the residential front gardens, containers and hanging baskets."

Now villagers are hoping for more good news when the North West regional Britain in Bloom prizes are handed out at a ceremony in Manchester in three weeks time.
