PROUD Heysham residents are urging more local people to join in - and really give them something to shout about.

Judges are about to descend on the picturesque village after it was nominated by the Royal Horticultural Society to take part in the Britain in Bloom Champion of Champions' competition.

The opportunity follows Heysham's success in gaining gold medals as the country's village of the year for two years running.

But Angela Sykes, spokesman for the Heysham in Bloom committee, says it has also given them a problem.

"This really is something we, as a small village would never expect to happen. We will be up against places like Nottingham and St Ives, which have huge budgets for this sort of thing, but we have nothing. We depend on people and firms helping us out, so this is a mountain to climb."

"We have no strict routine but if people can give us a little of their spare time - at any time of the day - I promise it will be very rewarding seeing the work come to fruition."

She says the committee would love' to hear from volunteers to help with everything from weeding and painting street furniture to donating plants or money, or even updating the village website.

"This is a positive thing. No place in this area has every one this competition and it is such an honour for us to be entered into such a prestigious competition," adds Angela.

"When we won gold we were told it was like winning the Premiership in football terms - so this must be the European Champions League."
