YOUNG people in Hyndburn were taught how to fish as part of a scheme with police.

Up to 10 young people aged between 9 and 14 were taken on fishing trips in August to Devine Fisheries, Broad Oak Road, Accrington.

Funding for the equipment was acquired through the Community Safety Partnership in Hyndburn and prizes for fishing competitions were provided by Ossy Tackle Box, Tescos, Hyndburn Angling and Darts Centre.

Youth community support officer for Hyndburn Tracey McCarney said: “They caught perch, bream and roach, with the biggest fish about nine inches long, weighing about 2.5 lbs.

"The weather was good and the young people all enjoyed themselves.

“The activity allowed them to focus on something different and many have now developed a new hobby.”

"At the end of the project all the young people recieved photographs, certificates and an information pack of local fisheries and tackle shops.”
