TWENTY taxis were stopped and checked as part of a police operation in Hyndburn.

Prohibition and defect notices were issued to six taxi drivers after their vehicles were found to have defects including faulty brake lights, broken wing mirrors, leaking exhaust systems and dangerous parts.

Cautions were handed to four drivers for failing to have first aid kits or fire extinguishers.

Police issued a warning after one driver failed to stop.

The work was part of a crackdown on unsafe vehicles.

It follows a previous operation that saw 50 warning notices issued for failing to wear a taxi badge, not displaying signs and for having no fire extinguisher or first aid kit.

PC Simon Grounds said: “There are more than 420 licensed taxis in Hyndburn, most of which are operated and driven properly and by drivers who take great care of their passengers.

“Unfortunately there are some who are less stringent in their standards and it is them we are targeting.

“This operation is all about safety, both for the driver and their passengers.

“Those drivers who adhere to the rules are being hindered by those who do not and who risk tarnishing this professional and essential service.”
