DARWEN Town Council will not be contributing to the town’s Christmas lights display this year.

Julia Simpson, Blackburn with Darwen Council’s project development manager, told the town council that due to budget cuts, there would be no borough funding for security, event staff or business Christmas trees.

She also said there would be no money to run a second Christmas market.

Coun Steve Duncan, leader of the town council said: “The issue of the lights is for businesses to sort out, not the town council.

"Last year we spent £3,500 on additional lights for the town centre, and we too have a restricted budget.

"We have done as much as we can.”

The town has, however, proposed to pay up to £1,000 towards a Christmas tree decoration activity for disabled children, featuring Wellybobs farm and selection box gifts.
