A drug-dealer who led police on a high speed chase has been ordered to pay back more than £20,000.

Jobless addict Imran Azam, 24, was jailed for 27 months in February 2009 after being caught with a stash of cannabis and a large amount of cash.

At a Proceeds of Crime Act confiscation hearing, at Preston Crown Court on Monday, it was deemed Azam had benefitted to the amount of £13,384.57 from his criminality and had assets worth £7,213.66.

He was ordered to pay back the total amount within six months, or face a further five months in jail – with the order still to be paid.

Azam, formerly of Brougham Street, Burnley, was caught when he was spotted driving illegally by police after being involved in a high speed car chase a few months earlier.

In May 2008 he clocked up to 110 mph in an unrelated pursuit through Greater Manchester and managed to leave officers trailing even though they put down four stingers.

He went through several red traffic lights, drove on the wrong side of the road and almost hit a bus, the court heard.

The defendant was finally caught after reaching a dead end.

He was bailed after the high-speed chase but in December 2008 police saw him in a vehicle in Nelson.

A search of the car revealed four snap bags of cannabis worth £600, a mobile phone and a cannabis grinder and £700 cash.

Police went to his former home in Whitehall Street and discovered another 30 bags of cannabis bush.

He admitted dangerous driving and possessing cannabis with intent to supply.
