SEVERAL key schemes are set to be given the go-ahead to make life easier for the travelling public in Burnley.

Before the end of June 2012 town hall bosses must spend a £176,000 budget, which stems from the construction of the Tesco Extra store on Centenary Way.

No fewer than eight initiatives, centring around the Croft Street bus station, Burnley Manchester Road railway station and key roads, have been drawn up.

The largest single project, totalling £50,000, will see links between the bus station and the town centre improved, along with a two-way cycle lane along Croft Street.

And much-needed pedestrian crossings will be provided at the junction of Manchester Road and Hammerton Street, and Trafalgar Street, near Dent Row.

Elsewhere a new illuminated information board is proposed outside Manchester Road station, giving directions to public buildings, shopping areas and the bus station.

Property head Nick Aves said in an executive report: “The proposed works were identified within the legal framework agreed between Burnley Borough Council and Tesco Stores.”

Another £25,000 is destined to be spent on improved energy-efficient long-life internal lighting at the bus station, which should provide clearer CCTV images, for crime prevention purposes.

New 42-inch public information screens will also be installed, one in the bus station and another in the Tesco store.

Extra landsaping is also pledged in and around the former Thompson Centre car park, off Red Lion Street.

The nearby access to the bus station will be also improved for single and double deckers, making it more difficult for other traffic to accidentally turn into the interchange.
