SEVEN people were taken to hospital after a crash in Blackburn town centre tonight.

A Suzuki Swift, carrying a woman and a child, and a silver Honda Accord, carrying two adults and three children, crashed at around 7.30pm at the Penny Street and Barbara Castle Way junction.

Four ambulances and two fire engines attended the scene.

Police closed Penny Street as firefighters cut off the roof of the Suzuki.

A woman, thought to be in her 40s, and her son, aged around 10, were freed from the car, while the family in the Honda were able to get out themselves.

Crew manager Alex Wilson said: “All the casualties have been taken to hospital. “The mum and son were both conscious and none of the injuries are suspected to be life-threatening.”

Witnesses said the Suzuki was travelling southbound towards Penny Street while the Honda was travelling across Barbara Castle Way.

Penny Street became a one-way street just over a week ago and drivers are now only able to drive northbound up the road towards Barbara Castle Way.

Police closed Penny Street and it remained closed until after 9pm.
