A Cricket club faces a hefty bill to repair a 150-year-old wall that has come crashing down.

The stone wall at Lowerhouse Cricket Club, Burnley, fell down during the recent cold snap and is still to be rebuilt.

Bosses at the club said the frost had increased damage to the structure of the stone wall and it had fallen down as a result.

They now face a race against time to repair the wall before the new season starts.

They must also check the structural integrity of the rest of the wall.

Stan Heaton, secretary of the Liverpool Road club, said: “We are getting quotes to get it repaired now but because of its age and the type of stone, it is proving very expensive.

“We got one quote of £7,500 which was far more than we were looking to pay, but we’ve managed to get a few quotes closer to our budget now so hopefully we can make some progress with the repairs.”

The club are now looking into how to fund the repairs, with the insurance unable to help because it doesn’t cover weather damage.

Mr Heaton said: “We are looking at what grants we CAN get but we are conscious it is an eyesore and it needs to be repaired, whether that be through grants, fundraisers or normal income.

“We’ve considered fundraising but our biggest fundraiser is our Sportsmans Dinner and that doesn’t even raise half of what we need.

“We’ve had a lot of help from local groups but everything so far has reached a dead end.

“It is a possibility we could put a fence up there instead but that is something we would have to discuss with our neighbours as well.”
