I write regarding the proposed development of the Kingsway Baths site in Lancaster, where developers were champing at the bit to raze the complex to the ground until a last minute preservation order was made.

I welcomed this salvation, for although the architectural merits of the building are dubious, I think you should always retain a building that is even half bad to avoid being saddled with a substitute that is wholly bad.

I could never have imagined I would be confronted by the multi-storey monster, depicted in the Citizen the other week. What can they be thinking of? One guess... money.

Apparently they can cram 100 flats into this area. Should this proposal come to pass it will make a mockery of the preservation order by completely dwarfing the old baths.

Why don't they cement pebbles to the exterior walls while they are at it - then it will resemble Lakeland House, that other eyesore tower block on Morecambe seafront.

I pity the poor residents living at the rear of the monstrosity, who will have their light, view and privacy stolen.

I also pity prospective residents of the flats as they nudge their vehicles onto the one-way traffic system and pray for preservation.

I sincerely hope these plans are reconsidered in favour of a more visually pleasing structure at the gateway to the city centre
