A £70,000 plan to revamp rundown Colne Railway Station is set to be announced next month.

Lancashire County Council is putting the finishing touches to a scheme it hopes will make passengers feel safer.

It also hopes to boost the number of people travelling from the station at a time when train operating companies want the government to reduce the number of services they have to operate on underused lines.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: "We have a scheme. Funding to support it is due to be approved next month.

"The aim is to provide an environment passengers feel more comfortable travelling in."

The scheme includes the installation of CCTV, new passenger shelters, improved lighting, general environmental improvements, new signs and better passenger information.

Final consultation is taking place with Pendle Council, train operator Northern Rail, track owner Network Rail, the British Transport Police, and the East Lancashire Community Rail Partnership.

A decision is due on September 5 by County Councillor Tony Martin, who is in charge of transport at the county.

It is one of a number of schemes the county council has developed to try and improve the East Lancashire line, which runs between Colne and Preston.

Oswaldtwistle station has new CCTV and shelters after the authority linked up with nearby tourist attraction Oswaldtwistle Mills.

But a space-age redesign of Burnley Central Station was shelved in January after costs spiralled.

A partnership has been formed on the line to try and bolster community involvement on the railway.

Projects include 'Friends of Station' schemes, aimed at improving the look of stations.

The partnership hopes an increase in passengers may lead to operator Northern Rail reconsidering its decision not to invest in new trains for the line - and help to keep the line in place.
