A MAN who "ram raided," a designer menswear shop in Barrowford has been jailed.

Wayne Thornton, 28, and brother Darren, 27, who also took part in the raid, escaped with clothing worth almost £5,000 from Robert Anthony Menswear, Gisburn Road.

The pair broke down the front door with a stolen car, Burnley Crown Court heard.

Wayne Thornton, of Carrington Street, Bradford, was sent to prison for four years after he was convicted of burglary by a jury. Darren Thornton, of Rectory Road, Keighley, had earlier been sent to custody for 32 months, after admitting the offence.

The court had been told the brothers had stolen an Escort car from Barrowford, rammed the shop and stole designer clothing worth £4, 449.

Police chased a Peugeot 309 car into which the defendants had transferred the haul from the Escort. Darren Thornton was arrested at an address in Colne and his trainers were found to have left marks in the Escort.

The Peugeot 309 was traced to the defendants' mother's address in Bradford and Wayne Thornton was arrested a month later. His trainers matched marks left inside the shop.

The defendant claimed his brother must have borrowed the trainers.

The court heard when questioned by police, Wayne Thornton denied ever having been anywhere near the shop. He also denied any knowledge of the Peugeot but his DNA was found on a cigarette butt in the car.
