HOUSEBOUND pensioners in Pendle are to benefit from a new advisory service and confidential sessions offered by a Nelson charity.

Nelson Age Concern, in Scotland Road, will start individual home visits as part of a larger information scheme for the elderly.

The new service will also offer regular confidential sessions at the offices every Tuesday between 10am and 1pm.

Linda Salazar, Lancashire information and advice manager, said the home visits will target elderly people who traditionally do not claim benefits that they are entitled to.

And they will also advise pensioners about the new Pensions Credit benefit that recently replaced the Minimum Income Guarantee last month.

She said: "Some elderly people are still proud about claiming and they see it as charity instead of a right. But with education and our services we hope to challenge that.

"The new Pensions Credit, which was launched on October 6, is more generous to people who have made provision for retirement than its predecessor.

"We have just had our offices refurbished and have a separate room where enquiries for information and advice can be discussed in confidence and private."

The branch has also organised an open day on Thursday, November 27, for people to see the facilities and meet the staff.

They will also have the chance to enter a prize draw for a brand new electric blanket.

To book a home visit or a session at the office call Kathleen or Mary at the Nelson office on 01282 695876, or visit the office, which is open midweek every day, except Tuesdays, from 10am to 4pm.
