VOLUNTEERS are being offered the chance to help restore a unique piece of machinery.

The Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust is seeking young people from the Leigh area who would like to gain work experience by maintaining and promoting Wigan Pier's huge Trencherfield mill engine.

A complete overhaul began last October, thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and work is expected to be completed in June.

Project assistant Stuart Holden said: "This is a great opportunity for young people to learn the mechanics and history of a leading piece of technology of its day. Those with an interest in engineering, museum operations or social history may be particularly interested."

Helpers will assist staff in maintaining the engine, the largest of its type in operation, and in giving talks about its history and technology.
