PRESTWICH is to be given a good old fashioned spring clean thanks to a new initiative.

A dedicated "Green Team" is set to sweep the town from top to bottom and give priority areas a thorough deep clean.

The project is being co-ordinated by Prestwich Area Board in conjunction with cleansing services and will have a bucketful of cash (£30,000) to polish off the job.

The scheme has proved successful in Radcliffe, and Prestwich was deemed to be next on the list after several suggestions were put forward for attention under the borough-wide Safer, Cleaner, Greener initiative.

Area co-ordinator Carran O'Grady said: "We had lots of ideas coming to us for cleaning up grotspots in Prestwich. There were too many to be dealt with under the Safer, Cleaner, Greener scheme, so I asked if the Deep Clean project could be started earlier than intended for Prestwich."

Carran is now looking for members of the public and local organisations to put forward their ideas for areas that need sprucing up.

Bright yellow forms for nominations will be available at most public places in Prestwich and the Green Team will do their best to work through the worst grotspots.

Local groups and residents can also join in the work as some areas may benefit from a community clean-up day.

One suggestion has already been made by Gillian Boyle, secretary of Prestwich Residents Association, at last week's area board meeting.

She said the pond at the bottom of Prestwich Clough, used regularly by anglers, was full of litter and needed cleaning up.
