A NEW professional theatre group has taken up residence in Leyland and is calling on talented youngsters to come on-board.

Bosses at Blackpool's Grand Theatre Academy opened the doors to their new school this week at Worden Park's Marsden Theatre.

The group aims to develop the acting and dance skills of youngsters aged 11-19 with tuition from professional artists from film, television and the stage.

Professional drama company, C'est Tous, which was based at the theatre, moved its operation to Eccleston, near Chorley, about six months ago.

The new venture is in response to the high number of applications, from across Lancashire, from youngsters wishing to join the long-established Blackpool academy, based at the town's Grand Theatre.

Academy director Paul David-Gough said: "We have been overwhelmed in Blackpool by the number of applications for membership to the academy.

"It's not at all a pleasant experience turning talented young people away, just because you haven't got the places.

"It's for that reason that we've decided to open up a second academy here, at Worden Arts Centre.

"We've taken our time to find the right location and Worden seems the perfect choice."

It is hoped the Leyland academy will operate in the same way as the Blackpool group with youngsters split into age groups of 11-14 and 15-19 years old.

Although young people of all abilities can audition for a place, numbers will be limited so they can be assessed more closely and developed through a suitable programme of work.

Members will be expected to take part in public performances and Shakespeare, comedies and musicals could be included on the bill.

Young people interested in applying for membership can write to Mr David-Gough at The Grand Theatre, 33, Church Street, Blackpool, FY1 1HT, or email him at Info@gtacademy.freeserve.co.uk or call 07951769847.
