THE champagne was flowing at Bury Golf Club when Gary Dempsey and Gary Kelly won the right to represent the club in the semi-finals of the International Pairs to take place at a top Scottish course.

Gary Dempsey, an 18-handicapper, and Gary Kelly, who plays off 10, beat off the challenge of 63 other pairs to reach the semi-final stage.

And they will be joined in Scotland by Anthony Jordan, a nine-handicapper, and Charlie Galloway, who plays off 16. The second-placed duo will travel because a club is entitled to send a duo for each 25 pairs they have participating in the qualifier.

There is still time for clubs in to register for the tournament. The International Pairs - the largest club competition of its kind in the world - is now in its sixth year and attracts tens of thousands of entries from club golfers across UK.

The 2003 final was held at the new St Andrews Bay resort. Entry to the competition remains just £5 per person - unchanged for the fifth successive year - and clubs simply need 25 pairs to participate to guarantee their winners travel to the final stages.
