A COMPETITION has been launched to warn young people of the dangers of alcohol.

Burnley Community Safety Partnership's Alcohol Action Group is inviting under 18s to design a computer mouse mat to highlight the fact that booze can be bad news.

Winning entries, chosen bythe Community Safety Partnership, will be made into mats and distributed to schools and youth groups in Burnley and Padiham.

Best overall designer will receive a Sanyo digital camera, courtesy of P3 Computers.

There will also be runner-up prizes, including passes to a theme park.

Inspector Andy Moore from Burnley Police said: "A lot of work is in under way in Burnley to promote sensible drinking and reduce drink-related violence and disorder.

"However, much of this work is aimed at the over 18s who have already begun drinking.

"The aim of this competition is to target younger members of our local community and relay our message about sensible drinking to schools and colleges."

Closing date for the competition is Thursday, September 30.
