I AM neither a supporter of nor a member of the BNP, but I do object to the Bishop of Burnley interfering in local/national politics by advising people not to attend the BNP's annual festival (LET, August 9).

We know that church and state are irrevocably bound together in one way and another, although the state has been remiss in many of its recent activities and the state religion has not been particularly well defended or represented.

Personally, I consider the activities of an under cover reporter, to whom the Rt Rev Bishop refers, to be completely out of order, if not unlawful.

It would be interesting, I am sure, to discover what is said or what goes on behind many closed doors in many "private" meetings of a number of religious or political factions.

This wishy-washy government, the do-gooders, the politically correct merchants and others of that ilk are destroying this country socially, educationally, culturally, religiously, politically and eventually, economically.

I suggest that the Bishop would be well advised to concentrate more on work in his own field instead of wandering into the field of politics.

MR R BRACEWELL, Worsthorne.
