BLACKBURN Rovers have today rubbished reports linking them with a swoop for Burnley starlet Richard Chaplow.

The 19-year-old midfielder recently signed a new four-year deal with the Clarets, and Rovers chief executive John Williams has denied making a £2 million bid for him.

"That's absolutely not the case," said Williams.

"There's never been any discussion with Burnley about a transfer or anything like that.

"In terms of new players, we'll have to see what transpires before the window closes but we've got a strong squad and fingers crossed there were no more injuries on Saturday."

Rovers' Premiership campaign kicked off with a disappointing 1-1 draw against newly-promoted West Bromwich Albion at Ewood Park.

They trailed to a deflected Neil Clement free-kick at the break but, inspired by the introduction of Paul Dickov and Tugay they fought back with an equalising header from Craig Short.

Manager Graeme Souness said: "We changed the system and a couple of players and we just stepped it up a yard, which we had to do.

"If it was 0-0 we'd have come in happy that we were kicking to the Blackburn end because we always generally step it up when we kick that way.

"I've got to be happy we've taken a point but I'm sure tomorrow morning I'll wake up and I'll think it should have been three.

"Tugay keeps the ball as well as anyone in the Premiership. He did that for us today and put me under pressure to include him for the next game. He is a hard man to leave out."
