STEVE Cotterill insists Burnley are still not firing on all cylinders, despite picking up his first win as Burnley boss.

The Clarets put in a storming second half performance to take all three points at Watford courtesy of Ian Moore's 64th header.

Saturday's away win leaves Burnley still unbeaten this season following impressive first half performances that laid the platform for points earned against both Sheffield United and Rotherham.

And Cotterill is now urging his side to marry up their Jekyll and Hyde halves to create a monster that will really take some stopping.

He said: "I asked for a second half performance and I got it, but I'd like the first half to go with it now!

"We can't quite match that up at the moment, although I'm sure we will in time and for now, I'm just delighted with the points.

"We did enough in the second half and created enough chances and for the goal itself, it was a fantastic save from the goalkeeper.

"I was just hoping it dropped to us, but it took an age to come down and I just hoped he hadn't got up quickly enough for Ian to head it straight and the lad make another point-blank save. Thankfully, that didn't happen."

Burnley survived a few late scares to maintain their impressive start, first when the unmarked Paul Mayo headed over the bar at the far post with just four minutes remaining.

Then, with just 60 seconds left, Heidar Helguson found himself all alone at the far post to chest down a deep cross and blaze hopelessly over the bar with just Danny Coyne standing between the substitute and an undeserved equaliser.

Cotterill added: "It might have looked a comfortable win, but not in these shoes! When they throw a couple of late balls in the box like that and you see a player of Helguson's ability, it makes the heart skip a few beats.

"But we could have scored a few goals in the second half ourselves but for some good goalkeeping. We had one cleared off the line and another one Richard Chaplow pulled just wide, so it could easily have been more, but it wasn't and it's never over until the final whistle goes.

"Watford are a difficult side to play against - very hard working and organised and coming off the back of a 3-0 home victory. We knew it was going to be tough and so it proved because in the first half we never got going."

Burnley rarely looked like conceding though, and improved their solid defensive record to chalk up a second successive clean sheet and leave them with just one goal conceded in three league games.

Cotterill explained: "First and foremost, making us hard to beat was the name of the game. You set your stall out to make sure you don't get beat and we are delighted so far.

"It's another clean sheet and we'd have settled with five points from three games.

"We've had some tough opening games in Sheffield United and Rotherham and coming to Watford on the back of their home win was always going to be tough.

"So we are delighted with the start, but it is only a start. When we win we will enjoy it, but we are not getting carried away with anything."
