BRITAIN's only boxing representative at Athens - Bury's Amir Khan - easily beat Greek Marios Kaperonis in the first round of the lightweight boxing competition on Monday.
The referee stopped the contest after one minute nine seconds of the third round with Khan, who lives in Heaton and boxes for Bury, leading 32-12 on points.
Home favourite Kaperonis made a fast start against the 17-year-old student, landing three good shots to move ahead in the bout.
However, Khan started to find his range in the second half of the opening round and the scores were level at 6-6 at the bell.
Khan stepped up a gear in the second, landing wonderful combinations before moving clear of danger, and he finished it with an 18-11 lead.
Kaperonis, supported by a vociferous crowd, had been totally outclassed, and Kahn managed to increase his lead to 32-12 in the third round - which meant the referee had to stop the contest due to Khan's 20-point lead, as stipulated by Olympic rules.
