LEISURE chiefs in Pendle are getting ready for a fun day at the Leeds and Liverpool Canal that could help to make the waterway a bigger tourist attraction.

Victorian fairground rides, kite making, Hindu dancing and a drumming workshop will all be by the canalside at Swindon playing fields, Nelson. Singer Aasia, dancers Madhu Pandja, Bright Fusion Percussion, acoustic band Now Then, and Stanley Accrington will also entertain the crowds.

People are encouraged to dress up for the Our Canal, Our Heritage event in traditional costumes.

Pendle's canal corridor co-ordinator Tricia Wilson said she hoped the day would lead to people making more use of the canal at Nelson.

She said: "It's free fun for all the family and hopefully people will come along and enjoy it.

"We're trying to raise awareness of the canal at Nelson because it's under used. We want more people to come down and walk their dogs or use the new cycle tracks.

"We want to get more boaters as well."

Our Canal, Our Heritage will start near Nelson's Hodge House estate and canal bridge number 142 at 11.30am.
