TELEPHONE masts could be put up in a Brierfield street, raising health fears among residents.

An application for a telecommunications base station with a 20-metre slim-line mono-pole tower, three antennae, two transmission dishes and radio equipment housing on the former Brierfield Goods yard in Railway Street has been submitted to Pendle Council.

People living in Railway Terrace, Forrest View and King Street Terrace have been asked what they think about the plans and 11 residents have objected.

They are worried about health risks from radio emissions and Brierfield Town Council has echoed their concerns.

But Pendle Borough Council planning officers have said the proposed mast would be 30 metres from houses and that the application, made by Hutchison 3G UK Ltd, was in line with the accepted international standard on radio frequency emission safety and posed no danger to health.

Residents are also worried about the unsightly appearance of the development, its effect on housing renewal in the area and the nearby woodland.

Members of Pendle Council's Brierfield and Reedley Committee will discuss the application at their meeting in Brierfield Town Hall tonight at 7pm.

Officers have recommended councillors approve the application.

Members of the pressure group Together Against Masts is also holding a meeting for residents to voice opposition to a mobile phone mast planned for the site of Calder Vale Rugby Club in Reedley.

Plans for a 20-metre mast have been submitted to the council but TAM founder Dennis Cannon said people were against the proposal. The public meeting will take place at the Oaks Hotel, Colne Road, from 6.30pm tonight.
