GREEN fingered Great Harwood residents will be given the chance to pick the trees in a council planting scheme.

The trees will replace those lost in recent years to a disease which wiped out many of the horse chestnut trees in the Memorial Park area. The Friends of Memorial Park group are working with Hyndburn Council to let locals have a say in the species of replacement trees.

At a public meeting, at Bank Mill House, Church Street, on September 13, residents will hear what types will be suitable as part of the final stage of the area's re-planting project.

Craig Horabin, Hyndburn Council's parks and open spaces manager, said: "

"What we are going to do is talk to people and ask them what they want to see and give them some suggestions of trees that are appropriate for the area. Then it will be up to the meeting to decide ultimately what they want."

The next and final stage of re-planting will be carried out during national tree week, from November 24 to December 1.
