A PARISH magazine read by Darwen people for 138 years has been saved from extinction.

The magazine of St Peter's, Darwen, and St Paul's, Hoddlesden, was under threat after editor Phil Leather decided to call it a day.

But now Darwen woman Margaret Yates, 58, has stepped in to continue the magazine, which was first printed in 1866.

Despite having no previous experience in editing a newsletter or magazine, Margaret felt something had to be done to stop the community losing the monthly magazine, which provides parish news, details of events, prayers and notices for community groups.

Margaret, of Harwood Street, will start editing her first magazine in November. She said: "I worship at St Paul's Hoddlesden and was very saddened to hear that the magazine might cease publication if no-one came forward. So I thought I would take on the role.

"I will need help as I have never done anything like this before. There's so much going on at St Peter's and St Paul's and in the schools which no one gets to know about."
