Leigh Tofts started their league campaign against a strong Broughton Park team.

Absences and injuries meant a much changed side from last week's warm-up game and this affected the Tofts performance.

They soon found themselves behind and could not prevent Park from stretching their lead despite sterling displays from the Green brothers amongst others. The pack struggled in the scrums against some dubious tactics which went unpunished and this meant that they were immediately under pressure when they won the ball. Although they battled valiantly they could not get on the score-sheet.

Sedgley Park 3 Leigh Vets 61

Leigh Vets got their campaign of to a good start with a 61-3 victory away to Sedgley Park 4ths.

Leigh took advantage of the large pitch and following good work from the forwards gave the backs a chance to show their speed and good backing up from Sutton led to the first try of the season under the posts.

These were followed by two tries from the strong running centre Smith. An outrageous dummy sold by Billinge led to his own try under the sticks with good backup play from Andy Westwell, that last try stretched the score to 28 points before the break with Sedgley only managing a three point reply from a penalty.

The second half was much the same, and an individual effort from Unsworth opened the scoring. Johnny Drunk was rewarded for his hard work in the second row with Steve Owen with a well earned try. Again good scrumaging from the front row to an excellent individual try from Delaney to score under the posts, and he shortly doubled his tally.

Leigh finished the afternoon with a try from MacMaster, with eight conversions from Ian Westwell.

Northwich Colts 14 Leigh 22

Leigh won a fine opener at Northwich as their new players gelled well to produce four excellent tries.

The game was very physical but Leigh finally opened the scoring when Matt Ashbrook timed his pass perfectly for Calvin Crompton to score by the posts. A Ryan Barker conversion saw Leigh lead 7-0 at the break.

Leigh then dominated the early part of the second period for long spells resulting in tries for Stuart Pirie and Ryan Barker. The home side hit back with a breakaway try before David Ashurst sealed the win with a try after good work by the forwards.

This was an excellent team performance with the senior players prominent. But mention must go to Gregg James and Matty Sewell who played strongly when introduced from the bench.
