ROSSENDALE'S youngsters are being invited to take part in a new scheme aimed at improving child safety when around dogs.

The launch of the pilot scheme -- Safe and Sound -- will take place tonight at Bacup Leisure Hall.

Aimed at children aged between eight and 15 years old, it is a five-week course designed to educate youngsters on how to approach dogs and how to be safer around them.

It is taking place in conjunction with tonight's Rossendale's Dog training Club's enrolment night for new and past members for the Kennel Club Good Dog Citizen Scheme.

There will also be a demonstration of training methods and a presentation of awards. The enrolment fee is £20 and £5 for yearly membership.

Anyone wanting to take part in either of the activities should go along to the leisure hall in Burnley Road from 7pm.

Rossendale's dog warden, David East, said: "We are one of only 12 clubs to be chosen to pilot the new Safe and Sound scheme.

"The first session will be running next Thursday from 6.30pm. Children need to come along tonight with their parents to enrol and for £5 they will receive an information pack and diary.

"They will take a progress test before getting a Kennel Club award at the end of the course. It's an extremely worthwhile course that will help make children act safer and more responsibly when around animals."

There will also be a buffet and bar for the adults. For more details ring 01706 244552.
