TEENAGER Adam Pinder of Great Harwood was leading the way as East Lancs racing cyclists were bringing back trophies from across the country at the weekend.

On Saturday the 14-year-old, a pupil of Norden school at Rishton, clocked fastest time in his age group in what is, in effect, the Time Trial National Championship for school pupils.

Pinder's time of 25 minutes 41 seconds for the 10 mile event in windy conditions on a Yorkshire course was 22 seconds better than the next best in his age category.

On the following day Pinder was helping his Blackburn and District CTC club to win the long established Beard Cup on a stiff hill climb near Oldham.

Overall fastest was Dave Collinge of Downham in 4m 57s, but Pinder rode well to take third place in 5m 27s and backed by fourth placed Paul Smith, latterly of Blackburn but who came home from his job in Germany to ride, the Blackburn team successfully defended the trophy held last year.

At the other end of the age range Peter Greenwood of Burnley and riding for the Clayton Velo club, was winning the overall 50-54 year old category award in another national event, the Percy Stallard Trophy, named after the man who introduced massed start road racing in this country.

Greenwood won the final of his five counting events in Staffordshire, while somewhat younger team-mate Billy Belcher of Rossendale was clinching second overall in his 40-44 year group.

The North Lancashire Road Club had a successful day in the Wigan Wheelers 25 with Stuart Whitehead of Langho overall winner in 56m 52s and backed by Pete Briscoe (1h 1m 22s) and Dave Brown (1h 2m 40s) the club won the team award, while Sue Cheetham (1h 9m 45s) was fastest lady.

Paul Warrener of the Rossendale Road Club rode particularly well for third place in 59m 15s.

Derek Schofield of Waterfoot was winner of the Rossendale Hill Climb Championship at Burnley in 9m 52s with John Ealing second (10m 01s), Paul Warrener third (10m15s) and Roy Flanagan fourth (10m 21s).
