THE plethora of home makeover programmes on TV is getting to me.

For 20 years I've been happy with my dark oak stained windows in the upstairs back bedroom.

However, house doctoring must have got to me while I was off last week and I decided to brighten up the room by painting them brilliant white.

I wish I hadn't bothered.

I rubbed the varnish down, bought some undercoat and ONE coat white gloss.

Three coats later it still needed another to cover the dark wood completely -- and with Georgian windows it's no easy task.

The rest can stay as they are, at least for the time being. Are we being brainwashed or what?
