OLDHAM RESERVES 0

BURNLEY may have beaten Oldham to the signing of Dean Bowditch, but their reserve team failed to pour more misery on the Latics last night.

The Clarets began the day by persuading the Ipswich striker that Turf Moor, rather then Boundary Park, was the ideal place to spend a month on loan.

But in the more modest surroundings of Accrington Stanley's Interlink Express Stadium, the killer touch was missing as Burnley's reserve team chalked up their ninth draw in 16 Pontin's League games.

Second-string boss Mark Yates said: "I thought we tried to play some decent stuff and Cayne Hanley held the ball up superbly all night.

"For a small striker, he has terrific strength and he's got the pace, so we just have to get him facing the goal a little bit more.

"We are progressing and although we are not winning many, we are not losing either and that's a good habit to get into. It's just the end product we need to work on now."

Hanley, a first team substitute 24 hours earlier against Leicester City, twice came close to ending the deadlock, first with a volley on the turn that flew over the bar.

And with time running out, Hanley found room in the box only to head Marc Pugh's dangerous cross straight at keeper Mildenhall.

Earlier, the Latics had the ball in the net in the 25th minute when former Crewe Alexandra striker Rodney Jack released Wes Wilkinson, who was ruled offside as he slotted the ball past Danny Coyne.

And Welsh number one Coyne was beaten again four minutes after the break when tricky left winger Jackson left defender Joel Pilkington in his wake and steered the ball towards the far corner.

However, Ryan Townsend was in the perfect position to make a superb block on the goalline and clear the danger.

BURNLEY: Coyne, Pilkington Trotman, Townsend, Scott, Pugh, McCann, Booth (Platt 83), Jones (Henry 45), Taylor (Lafferty 68), Hanley.

Subs not used: Hale, Reilly.
