PLANS to increase charges for parking in South Lakeland will be put back under the spotlight after an appeal was made in protest at the proposed move.
South Lakeland District Council’s cabinet had recommended a price hike across the region.
But opposition councillors asked for the decision to be ‘called in’ because they thought it could deter shoppers and tourists from visiting towns.
At a meeting of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee, it was agreed to send the decision back to full council on Tuesday, February 23 for a rethink.
If accepted, the proposals would see charges at all of the council’s 42 car parks increased from April 1.
In Ulverston and Milnthorpe this would be an increase by 20 pence for one hour, 50p for two hours, 70p for three hours, 80p for four hours and the all day tariff would increase by £1.50.
Car parks in Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside, Grasmere, Kendal and Kirkby Lonsdale would receive increases of between 10p and £1 with charges rising between 10p and £1.50 for all day parking in Grange-over-Sands.
A new six hour tariff would also be introduced, costing £5 in Kirkby Lonsdale, Milnthorpe, Ulverston, Kendal and Grange-over-Sands and £6 in Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside and Grasmere.
Coun Ian Stewart suggested that under the committee’s rules and regulations, the whole matter should be referred back to full council.
