TRAFFIC calming measures have been installed on a busy main road in a bid to foil speeding drivers.

Speed ramps have been put on Barrowford Road, which links Vivary Way in Colne, to Gisburn Road in Barrowford.

Traffic on the road is expected to increase once 32 houses have been built on the former Nelson and Colne College site.

It is hoped the measures will help to prevent accidents on the stretch, which is well-used by commuters.

Lancashire County Council staff installed the speed ramps on a section of the road, which has a 30mph limit, on Monday.

Vivary Bridge ward Coun Howard Thomas said he first asked highways chiefs to take action around three years ago.

He said: “There were a lot of complaints about traffic and speeding. People think it is the countryside when they see the fields by the former grammar school, but as the road narrows it becomes dangerous.

“There has been one or two accidents, particularly with motorbikes on the bend, so we asked for traffic calming.

“When the development has been completed on the former grammar school site it will be much more residential.”

Part of the road has a 30mph speed limit and another section has a 40mph limit.

Coun Thomas added: “People come at 40mph just before the bend, but they get up to 50mph which leads to problems. Safety is paramount.”
