Lancashire to help pilot ID cards scheme

LANCASHIRE residents will be among the first in the country to be offered controversial new ID cards, the Government has revealed.

From early next year, people across the North West will be allowed to apply for one of the cards, which will cost £30.

New Home Secretary Alan Johnson this week announced ID cards would not be compuls-ory in a move seen as a major government U-turn.

Plans to force some airport workers to carry them were also ditched.

Mr Johnson said: “Holding an identity card should be a personal choice for British citizens – just as it is now to obtain a passport.

"Accordingly, I want the introduction of identity cards for all British citizens to be voluntary.”

But opponents have pointed out anyone signing up for a new passport will still be entered onto the national database.

The North West will be used as a pilot area following the introduction of the ID cards scheme across Greater Manch-ester by the end of the year.

The Home Office hopes young people in particular will sign up so they can prove their age.

As well as the £30 fee, people signing up to the scheme will have to pay to have their biometric details taken.

Mr Johnson, who admitted the scheme would not be the answer to the terrorist threat facing Britain, said: “There will be significant benefits to individuals from holding an identity card, which will become the most convenient, secure and affordable way of asserting identity in everyday life.”

But Lib Dem Home Affairs Spokesman Chris Huhne branded the £5billion scheme “expensive and intrusive”.

Nigel Evans, MP for the Ribble Valley and chairman of the All Party ID Fraud Group, added: “ID cards have been a waste of time and money from the moment of their conception.

"They also pose a great deal of danger to the ID security of British citizens.

“I am pleased on the one hand that ID cards will not be compulsory, but the situation has now turned into somewhat of a farce.

"I am amazed the scheme has not been scrapped in its entirety.”

Hi All.

Dave the Burnley dingle.

What you mean to say is 'YOU' cannot understand the information on the website.
In the two weeks of its existence, and the fact this site is only being promoted in lancashire, The hits so far stand at 850.000 +.

So the same way as you are in the minority with your BNP affiliation, I am happy to confirm that the lancashire minds beg to differ...

Go and watch football or summat!

Life - it's David not Dave. He is an entirely different person. I guess your site might be quite popular for the sheer comedy value of it.

To sayit's only being promoted in Lancashire is somewhat of a misnomer though isn't it? Type 'lifeinthemix' into google and you will get 1300 results. As far as I'm aware google is available across the world so the potential audience is around 6.4 billion. 850k hits is not that big a return is it really?

Oh and by the way - I have no affiliation with any political party - or perhaps you might like to weave something into one of your conspiracy theories that suggests I do?!

Lol clearly you dont know how a police state works
They wont tell you its compulsary and you wont get fined, but you will find soon you wont be able to apply for a passport without one, and for those who say fine we wont fly, next you wont be able to apply for a driving licence without one and so on.

Hi All.

Well said AKKY, you have obviously done your research and conqured the fear which hits as soon as a mind looks outside the box.

AKKY is correct, they do not just shove it in your face, fascism creeps, then it reches the point of no return and everything gets shut down, food is rationed, they move your children wherever they deem fit, usually to their paedophile networks.

You should all take a close look at the Contingency Act to fully understand the immensity of what we face, but we can stop this and move to recreate Blighty as we together see fit.

you just have to understand who the nazi's are...remove them and hey presto...we have sanity, we have community instead of division.

DaveDingle get a life! the mix is just stating his thoughts - you just disrepect them without giving any counter arguments! Personally think he reads too much into co-incidence but I am sure he is not wrong about everything.

As for the governement and ruling elite ..... don't trust anything they say and don't meekly go along with their plans. Beware anything that they make you pay for and anyhting that gives them more control or information (= power!).

The Idea of an ID card doesn't worry me, I have a driving license and a passport anyway. What bothers me more is if the gov. decide we should have compulsary cards, why should we have to pay for them? I don't mind paying for the privilege of driving or international travelling, but paying to prove something that is already accepted in law as fact is just wrong. If they insist we carry ID cards, they should provide them for free.
