WELLINGTON boots will be out in force in a South Lakeland village, where a charity mission to Africa has captured the hearts and the imagination of the whole community.
When John Sainsbury of Outreach House Church (OHC) in Witherslack invited local residents on a mercy mission to Africa, he never dreamt the project would generate so much interest.
Yet, after hosting a two-day information event at the church, he now has a wacky fundraising event in the pipeline and more volunteers than there are places to go round.
“It went marvellously well,” he said. “We had just under 70 people through the house in two days, which is wonderful for our little village.”
The mission, which takes place next Spring, will see Mr Sainsbury lead a team of eight volunteers to the Congo-Rwanda border, where they will work with Heal Africa – an African charity that helps communities devastated by conflict and natural disasters.
It will cost each volunteer around £2,000 to take part in the mission and OCH is hosting the Witherslack Welly Weekend in October to raise funds.
The event will include an attempt to break the Guiness World Record for the most welly-clad people doing the Conga.
