The latest Lancaster and Morecambe news from the Westmorland Gazette

New Lancashire parking firm is chosen

A CONTRACT to control parking on Lancashire’s streets has been awarded.

Council bosses have not revealed which firm has been given the contract of enforcing on-street parking restrictions after September, but chief executive Ged Fitzgerald has approved the move.

It follows the breakdown of the controversial Parkwise scheme, which saw County Hall work together with district councils to enforce on and off-street parking throughout Lancashire.

The Parkwise contract expires in September and will not be renewed after it was dogged by costly overheads and bickering between councils over who should shoulder debts.

As a result, County Hall will be in charge of patrolling the highways while each district will control its own off-street car parks.

The winning firm will control both parking enforcement and IT.

District councils will be offered the chance to use the same company.

I thought Hyndburn has chosen not to have such a scheme that at the end drives away shoppers!

After a bad start caused by the Wardens letting power go to their heads, the scheme settled down, and thanks to the Wardens vigilance, parking places are not blocked all day, and one is able to find a parking place in Nelson.
